Benzene is a ubiquitous substance that can be found in our environment but can also form in limited conditions when potassium, sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid are found together in beverages. Regulatory agencies across the globe have studied benzene and found that the amount present in beverages is minimal and does not pose a public health risk. In fact, most benzene exposure is highest from inhalation.
The international beverage industry has taken steps to minimize benzene that may be found in its products. ICBA has created the ICBA Benzene Guidance Document to Mitigate the Potential for Benzene Formation in Beverages. The ICBA is committed to providing its members with the information necessary to prohibit and/or reduce benzene exposure through beverages.
