Sugars & Sweeteners
Sugars are carbohydrates that provide energy for the body. Sugars can be found in fruit, vegetables, honey and manufactured foods and beverages. Foods and beverages can contain different sugars including sucrose, fructose, glucose and lactose—or a combination.
The beverage industry provides a myriad of products to satisfy all tastes including beverages with and without various types of sugar. Common caloric sweeteners used around the world may include beet sugar, cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to name a few. In addition, no- and low-calorie beverages can contain a variety of sugar substitutes such as aspartame, acesulfame potassium or stevia.
